Why Social Media Marketing is Integral for Businesses in 2020

January 6, 2020
New Year 2020

Looking back on 2019, staggering numbers indicate that internet usage, and more specifically social media usage, is on a definitive rise. And not just slowly, but at an unprecedented rate. This means that more people across the globe are using the internet and social media for their everyday tasks from shopping to finding local amenities. As social media is becoming one of the most prominent forms of advertising today, this increase proposes an important message to business owners: social media marketing is a necessity for the success of your business.

The rise of internet usage globally furthers the understanding that social media marketing is essential for businesses. While looking into the findings of Hootsuite’s global report of 2019, we gain a better understanding of why social media marketing is widely accepted as an integral aspect of business marketing. To have a successful business in 2020, it is greatly suggested that business owners take into consideration the use or expanse to their social media marketing options.

The Growth of Internet Usage

With internet access becoming more and more available in differing regions around the world, it’s important to take into consideration the amount of new users as well as the rise in the amount of time that the average user spends online every day. Over 50% of the world population has internet access, with that percentage on the rise daily. In 2018, the rise in internet users each day grew by the million. Now, the average amount of time spent on the internet daily is 6.5 hours, with social media usage being the greatest amount of that internet usage time.

The amount of mobile internet users is increasing, with an estimated 100 million user increase in 2019. Every day, millions of people are using their mobile devices to access the internet, primarily for social media usage. The use of voice control of mobile devices makes the internet ever-more accessible to the public, including groups that may have previously had trouble with accessibility options.

More than half of the world population (5.112 billion) are mobile device users with a 2% increase of users from 2018 to 2019. That amount is slightly above the amount of total internet users (4.388 billion), which is roughly 1 billion users above the amount of active and mobile social media users (3.484 and 3.256 billion). These numbers are the most aggressive increase documented in Hootsuite’s published global report statistics of 2018 to 2019.

What This Means for Social Media Marketing in 2020

With an increase in over-all internet usage, social media usage increases with it. As the average internet user has 8 different social or messaging accounts, reaching the consumer spans beyond any singular social media service, computer management system, or website.

Increasing marketing strategies throughout multiple different social media channels is essential for businesses looking to reach a broad audience. This means that just having a website or single business Facebook page will not be enough to stand out in the marketplace. Businesses need to appeal to the new and growing audience through as many social channels as their target audience requires (roughly 4-6).

Why Social Media Marketing is Important to Begin With

The more traffic you receive through social media channels, the higher the likelihood that your business or organization will retain clients and reach a target audience. Effective and expansive social media marketing increases your chances of retaining new clients, selling a product, and establishing brand awareness.

Essentially, social media marketing expands your business or organization through the internet market, an entity that is one of the largest markets globally. To better affirm how important marketing is digitally, take a look at Black Friday online shopping sales in 2019. A record $7.4 billion was spent, not including Cyber Monday sales which attributed additional billions of dollars. If a business provides a product in 2020, it’s essential for that product to be marketed digitally if the desired target audience is to be reached, and sales quota to be met.

The Worlds Most Visited Social Media Websites

The world’s most visited social media websites in 2019 were Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, VK.COM, and Reddit. With this understanding, marketing through these top social media websites allows a business or organization to meet the standards of viewership that undoubtedly will increase through 2020. As most viewers are now researching and buying products through the internet, social media is a main outlet for products to be marketed and discovered by the consumer. No matter the size of your business, marketing through these top social sites is a necessity.

What to Expect in 2020

Based upon data collected in 2019, it can be expected that internet usage and social media usage will increase this year. Markets will expand and accessibility to information, products and services will be in higher demand throughout the year as well. With a total number of active social media members (3.484 billion in 2019) increasing throughout the year, the effectiveness and frequency of social media marketing posts will help determine the success of a business or organization. It is fundamentally important for all businesses to consider either utilizing social media marketing, or expanding the scope of their current online market through existing ones.
